Blood oranges are in season from December through April. When the season comes around, be sure to take advantage and enjoy this tasty and unique citrus fruit. They are delicious out-of-hand but also make a yummy salad dressing.
Blood Orange Vinaigrette is a sweet and tangy salad dressing and so much more! Not only is it great drizzled on top of your favorite winter salad, but it’s also delicious on fish tacos or roasted veggies. It can be used as a marinade for steaks. Make up a bottle of this vinaigrette and you’ll find plenty of uses for it.
What Makes Blood Oranges Red?
Blood Oranges get their distinct red flesh from anthocyanins, a type of antioxidant that is very rare for citrus fruits. While they have deeper red color, the flavor of blood oranges is very similar to a traditional orange.
How to make Blood Orange Vinaigrette
It’s easy to make your own Blood Orange Vinaigrette. Gather your ingredients and place everything in a bowl except for the olive oil and the salt and pepper. Whisk everything together and slowly drizzle in the olive oil. Whisk constantly while you add the oil. Finally, season the vinaigrette with salt and pepper to your liking.
Blood Orange Vinaigrette
Ingredients
- 1 cup blood orange juice freshly squeezed (approximately 4 blood oranges)
- 2 tbsp champagne vinegar (can sub white or red wine vinegar)
- 1 tsp dijon mustard
- 1 shallot minced
- 1 clove garlic minced
- 1 tbsp honey
- 2/3 cup olive oil extra virgin
- salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Place all ingredients in a bowl except for the oil & whisk to combine.
- Slowly drizzle in the oil, whisking constantly.
- Season with salt & pepper.

Can I use another citrus to make this vinaigrette?
Yes! If blood oranges aren’t in season, you can sub in another orange variety that is. You can also use bottled blood orange juice to make this vinaigrette.
